What is Trex?

Trex is a highly reputable company renowned for its composite decking materials. Their planks are crafted from a unique combination of wood, plastic, and rubber, which enhances durability and ensures an exceptionally long lifespan—hence the extended warranty on Trex products. Much like how the term "Coke" has become synonymous with any cola beverage, Trex has similarly established a well known name when it comes to choices for building a deck.

When is rebar not recommended?

There are certain situations where rebar is not advisable, particularly in interior slabs such as basements or subflooring. In these cases, the weight on the concrete is insufficient for the rebar to serve its purpose effectively. Instead, specialized fiber or high polymer blends of cement are more suitable for reinforcing these slabs.

The purpose of rebar is to increase the tensile strength of concrete. When the steel bars are added to the concrete they act as buffer for shifting forces on the concrete. This buffer helps reduce cracking in the concrete to a minimum. Unfortunately, there is no guaranteed way to prevent cracking in concrete.

This is why we encourage rebar grids to be added as a standard to any exterior slabs of concrete to help reduce cracking as much as possible always. Even if cracking does occur there are some options that can be taken to address the crack depending on its size.

Does an epoxy floor system make sense for you?

Epoxy flooring systems offer a vast array of colors and designs to choose from. Additionally, various complementary products are incorporated into the flooring system to reduce costs and improve durability. One notable product is Polyaspartic, often utilized as a clear top coat to provide scratch and UV resistance. While the price of epoxy can range from $3 to $7 per square foot, it represents a worthwhile investment that can endure a lifetime. If you have a workspace or carport prone to frequent damage or staining, such as oil drips, an epoxy floor coating is an excellent choice to enhance the aesthetic of your floor while simultaneously safeguarding your work area.

DIY or hire a professional?

This greatly depends on you and the nature of your project. Certain high-complexity tasks, such as concrete work, framing, or specialized fields like electrical, plumbing, and HVAC, are best entrusted to professionals. Errors in these areas can be exceedingly expensive and challenging to rectify. Projects involving load-bearing structures that must support substantial weight suspended above are also best handled by experts, as the potential for a collapse poses serious safety risks.

How long does the average project take?

The timeline is primarily influenced by the project's specific details, such as the overall square footage, complexity, and availability of materials. Factors you might overlook, like color and shape, can also contribute to longer lead times. In terms of the construction process, this phase is generally the most efficient. Labor duration can extend to several weeks, especially with potential weather-related delays. Nevertheless, you can be confident that most residential projects are typically completed within just 2 to 4 days.

Picking the right contractor

In today's world we are full of choices. Seemingly endless amounts of companies or products to pick from. So, when it comes to choosing a contractor, how can you be sure of making the right choice?

When it comes to hiring a contractor to perform work on your property you need to be sure they can do what they say they can do. A simple way to vet out unqualified contractors is to simply check that they are licensed and insured. A professional contractor will be able to furnish proof of both upon request. And once the information is provided you can easily further verify that the information is accurate and current by checking the Department of Professional Licensing's website at https://dopl.utah.gov/.

More then simply checking that a contractor is licensed. You also need to view their work history. Take a look at their website. How a person presents their business can tell you a lot about them. You should be asking yourself questions such as, "Does their website look professional?", "Do they have photos of their prior projects?" - if so how many?, "Do they have reviews from other customers?". All of these are great questions to help you get an understanding of the company and how they run their business. A customer referral is one of the most accurate ways to verify if a contractor is right for you or not. No customer will write a good review about bad work.

The last check you can do, is to feel out the person themselves. Any professional contractor will perform some sort of a "job-walk" before sending a number of estimated costs. A professional contractor will need to verify the job site whether it be through photos or a in person job-walk. If any contractor is willing to send a number before verifying the current job site it can be a indicator of a huge red flag. When interacting with a contractor whether it be over the phone or in person. See how they conduct themselves, "Are they professionally dressed?", "Can they answer my questions quickly and effectively?" - any pro should be able to answer general questions from his specialty without the need for additional resources, "How do they speak?". All of these are great ways to feel out a potential contractor to ensure he will remain professional on your project.

In conclusion there is a multitude of ways to verify a contractors integrity such as, license/ insurance check, work history/ customer reviews, and gut instinct on the person themselves.
